This exhibition of Nathaniel Hester’s oil paintings is from his series The Kissing Rocks in which he uses a surrealist idiom to capture the fertile possibility of latent life within inert objects — such as rocks — discovered deep within the deciduous woodlands of our continent. Figuratively trained, this artist clearly takes ample time to fully comprehend his subject and its salient, identifying features. Using an overall approach to composition, his lush, multilayered surfaces, inspired shapes, and rich palette of muted colors combine to imbue the immobile bodies with lifelike promise. For instance, the subjects in Kissing Rock #9 seem to dance with light as they emerge from the canvas sparkling like jewels in a gilded pond.

Hester earned his undergraduate degree in art & art history from Rice University, Houston, TX, and his master of fine arts degree from Boston University where he received the Recipient Constantin Alatov Merit Fellowship. Further institutes of art studies include the Kala Art Institute, Berkeley, CA, Manhattan Graphics Center, NYC, Art Student’s League, NYC, The New York Studio School of Drawing & Painting, NYC, and Parsons School of Design, Paris France, among others. His extensive exhibition schedule includes a Best in Show award at the Annual Juried Art Competition, Merkle & Price Gallery, South Arkansas Art Center, El Dorado, AR, July 5-27, 2007. Collections include the Agnes Mongan Center for Prints and Drawings, Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University; Amity Art Foundation; The Wunderman Group; and Florida Printmakers, University of Miami, Fl.
