The works of Cai Xi Silver
are extraordinary not only for their gutsy textures but
also for their comprehensive exuberance. Mixing wood chips
with acrylic paint, she uses trowels to apply the paint.
Sometimes, when the trowel gets stuck in the paint, she
leaves it there, as in Edge-CLIV. Some of her canvases are
full of paint; others show interplay between raw, unpainted
surfaces and painted ones.
Born in Chongqing and educated in the pilot
program in Fine Arts at the Shanghai Drama Institute, Silver
then traveled around China, sometimes paying for her room
and board by donating a painting she had just completed.
Her works are now purchased by collectors on both the eastern
and western coasts of the US and in China.
